Police issue section 61 notice to travellers on land just outside AXMINSTER

Due to multiple reports of anti-social behaviour from a large, illegal, traveller encampment, yesterday (JULY 8TH 2025), a notice to leave land Under section 61 of the Criminal Justice and public order act 1994, was issued by the Rural East Devon Neighbourhood Policing Team to the encampment at WEYCROFT. Foot patrol was carried out this morning in order to check on the progress of the notice to leave and the land at WEYCROFT has now been vacated and will be secured in an effort to prevent any future recurrence.

Inspector Mat Helm from the East Devon Neighbourhood Policing Team states – “Every community should be treated fairly but no one community should affect the quality of life of another. We are appreciative of the travellers for moving on expeditiously on service of the notice to leave, but we are also minded that there is a lasting impact on others from the local community. In this instance, it was seen as proportionate to use these eviction powers due to this impact on that wider community.”
